Gable

How often should you check toilets for silent leaks?

Once a year. On a calendar: August.

Why it matters

A worn flapper lets water seep from tank to bowl around the clock — silent, invisible, and often hundreds of liters a day on the water bill.

How to do it

Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait 15 minutes without flushing. Color in the bowl means the flapper needs replacing — a five-minute job.

Signs you've waited too long

A water bill that creeps up, or a toilet that refills briefly on its own ('ghost flushing').
