Gable

How often should you inspect tub and shower caulk?

Every 6 months. On a calendar: March and September.

Why it matters

Failed caulk lets shower water into the wall cavity, where it rots framing and feeds mold invisibly. Recaulking costs a few dollars; the wall repair costs thousands.

How to do it

Check the caulk lines around tubs, showers, and sinks for cracks, gaps, and mold that cleaning won't remove. Strip and recaulk failed sections with kitchen-and-bath caulk.

Signs you've waited too long

Spongy wall tile, peeling paint on the ceiling below a bathroom, or a musty smell that returns after cleaning.
