How often should you test GFCI outlets?
Every 3 months. On a calendar: January, April, July, October.
Why it matters
GFCI outlets protect the wet areas of the house from shock, and their internal mechanism can fail while the outlet keeps delivering power.
How to do it
Press the TEST button on each GFCI outlet in kitchens, bathrooms, garage, and outdoors. The outlet should go dead; press RESET to restore it. Replace any outlet that doesn't trip.
Signs you've waited too long
No visible sign — a failed GFCI looks and works like a healthy outlet until the moment it matters.
