How often should you have the chimney swept?
Once a year if you burn wood. On a calendar: September.
Why it matters
Creosote builds up in the flue with every fire and is the fuel for chimney fires. Inspection also catches flue cracks and blocked caps.
How to do it
Book a certified chimney sweep in late summer or early fall, before the seasonal rush. Between visits, burn only dry, seasoned wood.
Signs you've waited too long
Strong smoky odor from the fireplace, black flakes falling into the firebox, or smoke entering the room.
