Why it matters
In a burst-pipe emergency the main valve is the difference between a puddle and a disaster — unless it seized open years ago.
How to do it
Close the main valve fully, then reopen it. If it's stiff, work it gently back and forth; if it won't move or weeps, have it replaced on your schedule instead of during a flood.
Signs you've waited too long
A valve that hasn't been turned in years should be assumed stuck until proven otherwise.
