How often should you clean the dryer vent duct?
Once a year. On a calendar: March.
Why it matters
Lint in the exhaust duct is one of the leading causes of house fires, and a choked vent makes every load take two cycles instead of one.
How to do it
Pull the dryer out, disconnect the duct, and clear it end to end with a brush kit or vacuum. Check that the outside flap opens freely when the dryer runs.
Signs you've waited too long
Loads taking longer to dry, a hot laundry room, or a burning smell while the dryer runs.
